Donuts, also known as doughnuts or donuts, are a type of fried bread made from a dough consisting of wheat flour, sugar, eggs, and butter. The most common varieties are ring-shaped donuts with a hole in the center and round, filled donuts with sweet fillings such as chocolate spread, jelly, cream, and custard. Donuts can also be made with root vegetables, including sweet potatoes and potatoes. So, what do they taste like?
Potatoes can also be used to make donuts. Adding potatoes to the donut dough gives the donuts a softer texture, which is why potato donuts are loved by many people. Who says potatoes are only good for making French fries or boiled dishes such as mashed potatoes? This widely available root vegetable can also be transformed into delicious donuts.
Today, potato donuts can easily be found in traditional markets as well as at the many donut shops popping up in shopping centers. They are commonly coated with powdered sugar or topped with a variety of sweet toppings, such as chocolate, cheese, sprinkles, and nuts.
Potato donuts are a popular donut variation enjoyed by many. Compared with regular flour-based donuts, potato donuts have a softer texture. The preparation method is also quite similar to that of conventional donuts, with the addition of mashed potato or sweet potato to the dough. The basic recipe starts by combining wheat flour with sugar, milk powder, and instant yeast. The mixture is then combined with mashed potato or sweet potato, egg yolks, and cold water. Knead until the dough is partially developed, then add salt and butter.
Continue kneading until the dough becomes smooth and elastic, then let it rest for 15 minutes. Divide the dough into several portions and shape them into balls. Let them rest for another 20 minutes. Shape each portion into a ring and fry in hot oil until golden brown.
Potato donuts became popular in the United States before gaining popularity elsewhere. There, a donut variation known as spudnuts emerged in the mid-20th century and was popularized by a donut shop called Spudnuts Donuts.
The story began when brothers Al and Bon Pelton set out to create a new type of donut. They experimented by adding potato water to their donut dough, but the results were not particularly successful.
Undeterred, they tried again by incorporating mashed potatoes into the donut dough. To their surprise, the result was well received. The brothers went on to establish Spudnuts Donuts in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1940. The concept quickly expanded across the United States. By the early 1950s, Spudnuts Donuts had grown to approximately 350 locations.
