At that time, the idea emerged to coat almonds with sugar. Thus, praline was originally a term used to describe a nut-based mixture that was filled into chocolate. This later became one of Belgium’s signature chocolate specialties.
Today, the term praline refers to small chocolate pieces in various shapes, with a wide range of fillings inside.
Belgian pralines were first created in 1912. Eight years later, in 1920, the praline box was introduced using a Ballotin, a rectangular-shaped box. Before the Ballotin was used, Belgian pralines were wrapped in cone-shaped paper packaging.
In addition to their unique and elegant designs, Belgian pralines are carefully packaged to preserve their quality. From Belgium, praline chocolate eventually spread across the world. Chocolate industries in various countries began creating their own versions of pralines, featuring different shapes and a wide variety of fillings.
Today, praline has become a chocolate product that can be enjoyed by everyone—not only delicious, but also beautiful to look at.
