Trifle, A Special Dessert That’s Easy to Customize

The word trifle comes from English, meaning something trivial or light, referring to a simple dessert that was originally easy to make. Trifle was first recorded around 1596 in an English recipe book. At that time, trifle was quite different from what we know today. Its early version consisted of a thick cream flavored with sugar, ginger, and rosewater, without any layers of cake or fruit.

By the 18th century, trifle began to evolve into a layered dessert. Key elements were gradually added, including sponge cake or ladyfingers, alcohol such as sherry, wine, or brandy to soak the cake, custard, fruits, and whipped cream. These layers are typically arranged in a clear glass bowl, making the visual presentation one of its main attractions.

In the modern era, trifle has become highly flexible and creative. Alcohol can be omitted and replaced with fruit juice; flavors now range from chocolate, coffee, and caramel to matcha. Fruits are chosen according to taste and season, and trifle is often served in individual cups for a more practical and contemporary presentation.

Trifle is commonly served at special occasions such as Christmas, family gatherings, and major celebrations in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries. To this day, trifle remains a symbol of a classic dessert that is elegant, rich in flavor, yet easy to reinvent.
