Savoury Cookie Trends

Savoury Cookie Trends

In Indonesia, the market was initially dominated by sweet cookies such as nastar, choco chip cookies, cat tongue cookies, etc. However, savoury cookies are now becoming increasingly popular. Kastengel is one of the most well-known examples, and new innovations are emerging, such as savoury cat tongue cookies, premium cheese cookies, as well as spicy and fusion flavors.

Here are some popular types of savoury cookies. Cheese cookies feature a dominant cheese flavor (cheddar, parmesan, edam) with textures that can be crispy or slightly crumbly. Herb cookies use ingredients like rosemary, thyme, and oregano, offering a fragrant aroma with a “Western” taste, and are perfect to pair with soup or salad.

The development of savoury cookies is quite interesting, as they have evolved from simple snacks into premium and innovative products. Savoury cookies originally developed in Europe as part of the tradition of biscuit and cracker. They were made with little sugar, focusing more on savory flavors (salt, butter, cheese), and were commonly consumed as a side dish or a bread alternative.

In recent years, savoury cookies have been elevated into premium products, using ingredients such as cheese, herbs, and even truffle.
