The Origin and Creative Evolution of Matcha

Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder made from specially cultivated tea leaves. Today, it is widely recognized as a premium ingredient in beverages, desserts, and pastries, but its history dates back centuries.

 

Matcha traces its roots to China during the Tang and Song Dynasties, when tea leaves were steamed, compressed into cakes, and later ground into powder before being whisked with hot water.

 

In the 12th century, the Japanese Buddhist monk Eisai brought tea seeds and the practice of powdered tea preparation from China to Japan. Over time, Japan refined the cultivation and preparation methods, transforming matcha into an integral part of Japanese culture and the traditional tea ceremony known as Chanoyu.

 

Today, Japan is regarded as the home of modern matcha, with regions such as Uji and Shizuoka renowned for producing high-quality matcha.
